Known as the ‘Tree of life’, the coconut palm (cocos nucifera) is a member of the palm family (Arecaceae) and is the only accepted species of the genus Cocos. The name is believed to have been derived from the 16th century Portuguese and Spanish word coco which means ‘head’ or ‘skull’. It is thought the name was chosen because of the three indentations on the coconut shell that resemble the face of a monkey.
Depending on soil fertility, a coconut palm tree can have up to 75 fruits per year. Although we call the fruit a coconut, it is in fact a drupe and not a nut. The outside of the fruit is covered by a husk and the inside has the meat or kernel, which is dried to make copra.
The coconut palm is called the ‘Tree of life’ because it has been a staple source of food and medicine for many people across the tropics. Almost every part of the coconut palm tree has a use. The sterile water within the coconut fruit can be used as a source of water when no other water is available.
